From a distance, it is hard to tell how large this panel really is. It extends from the far left behind that big rock to the far right, beyond the frame of this picture.
Remember you can click on the photos to enlarge them to full size, making seeing the rock art easier!
Of course, graffitti is always a problem!
The one thing I have never seen, even in the petroglyph books, is that pair of "oars" top center! Maybe that is modern graffitti, I haven't a clue!
Probably the most amazing thing about Sand Island Petroglyphs is that for many years they were hidden from sight by the pesky tamerisk trees. Non-native, these plants take over everywhere in the Southwest where there is water! Utah is trying an experiment with a worm that feeds on tamerisk (or salt cedar) and it seems to be working! The worms actually cleared out the tamerisk from in front of these petroglyphs, petroglyphs that many folk had forgotten about.
3 strange figures at the top. Human or Alien ???
From a distance, it was hard to tell this panel existed. The fence it below was the clue! There are still some tamerisk trees trying to make a come back here.
The second part of the panel...... this panel was well protected by the rock overhang.
Our Sand Island camp site!
Hope you enjoyed the petroglyphs from Sand Island. There is a vey nice campground here, right on the river. It is a BLM campground and the rates were very reasonable. $5.00 a night for Seniors and $10.00 a night for you youngsters! There were bathrooms provided throughout the campground. RV Sue had the best campsite, right on the San Juan River watching the float trips go by! We said our sad goodbyes to Sue yesterday... :-( she is such a very special friend! We will see you on down the road Sue, we love you too!
Crew of the MotherShip signing off for the night!
Chuck, Geri, DoogieBowser and Radar!
as always, great pix !
ReplyDeleteThanks Larry! Hug Betty from us and give an butt scratch or two to Poco from DoogieBowser and Radar!
DeleteHAH! While I was looking at all the petroglyph pics at the start of the post, I was thinking 'some of those could be aliens if you look at them the right way'. And then you had to go and say it!! Did any look like UFOs? LOL
ReplyDeleteI have seen so many shows on the history channel about ancient aliens, I believe that some of these rock drawings are exactly that!
DeleteThanks to you guys mentioning Bluff, UT, we visited Sand Island and saw the impressive petroglyph walls last September. Also those amazing Goosenecks!
ReplyDeleteThe rock images at Sand Bluff are some of the most interesting I have seen. Glad you got a chance to enjoy them last year!
ReplyDeleteHi guys,
ReplyDeletegot the message this afternoon that RvSue's blog has been taken down by Wordpress -- do you know if she's ok?
RV Sue has a message to everyone in Al's Shoutbox on thebayfieldbunch blog
DeleteThanks!
DeleteEileen in Phx
Write to wordpress and demand that rvsueandcrew.com be allowed to post! She is taking care of it from her end, but I think wordpress should know from us that she has many, many followers who object to their thinking she is not real!
DeleteI wrote to Matt Mullenweg facebook page. He is co-founder of word press.
DeleteHow could you possibly suspend RVsue and her canine crew- word press blog? She has a lot of followers and you just pissed of 500,000 people. That isn't good business. I will personally take my word press blog down myself and tell everyone I know to use Blogger. I'm sure what ever the perceived violation, was not intentional. She will go host some where else and will continue. And we the people will find out the facts and shout it from the tops of web pages. How Word press is stepping on the people.
Everyone should post I agree!
Thank you Laurie for sharing a name and a place to go and protest the removal of Sue's Blog. I hope everyone sees this message and floods him with messages!Geri
DeleteThank you for the update
ReplyDeleteI could not believe what I was seeing when that Word Press message appeared. I immediately wrote to Wordpress. We need RV Sue....
ReplyDeleteVal from Lakefield Ontario
I knew I would get info about what's up with Sue here. Looks like she's found another place to host her blog (per Al's shoutbox on Bayfield Bunch). I'll keep an eye here and Bayfield for updates.
ReplyDeleteHello Geri . . . I hope you don't mind me using your comments section to communicate with some of my readers.
ReplyDeleteI'm touched by the passionate outcries I read here in response to the shutting down of my blog. I wish I could give you information why this was done. All I have in explanation from WordPress is a generic message that contains several reasons, obviously what they send out in many different circumstances.
I have emailed WP and I await further explanation.
I will try to transfer my blog over to Hostgator once I'm given access to it by WP. It will be difficult because I don't know tech stuff very well and I have to camp where there's signal. A Memorial Day party is arriving soon to the site next to us. Ackkk!
This is only a bump in my road. But I have a high-lift axle and will get past it! Thank you very much for your loyalty and concern. My readers are super!
Sue, you are more than welcome to post here anytime! I hope we can get the word out to all of your faithful readers that you might be posting updates here and perhaps they will take the time to contact wordpress to re-instate you!!! Geri
DeleteAin't life grand. this kind of stuff goes on more everyday. I read the terms and conditions and found nothing that indicated any infringement. Sounds like some of the above may be right, they think Sue is not Sue but a ROBOt? Gotta LOVE the intelligence of the generation running things these days, I am so glad I am NOT 20 something and have this BS to look forward to dealing with during a career. Bad enough to have to deal with it now. Good Luck Sue and can't wait to see you prevail.
ReplyDeleteOh no, this is not good. I hope Sue can get this straightened out, or start using Blogger or something else.
ReplyDeleteNice of you, Geri, to relay the messages to us.
Everything must of gotten worked out with Sue and Word press. I went to her blog and it's back.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed seeing all the pictures you posted of Sand Island. I lived in southern Utah for 5 years (until 2010) and I've never been here. It was really interesting seeing it.
Thanks Ginger, sorry you missed Sand Island while you were here!
DeleteGreat to have RVSue back online!
Has rv sues web address changed? I'm still getting message from WordPress that's its unavailable.. Thank you
ReplyDeleteSue's blog address is still the same, not sure for how long. However you will need to fill in all the info just like the first time you went to visit her site! I guess when they took her offline, all our information disappeared as well.
DeleteThank you! That worked! :)
DeleteLooks like a nice place to camp. Love all the detail and information on the petroglyphs.
ReplyDeleteThis was a very nice place to camp, until the wind hit! Then it became a dust bowl, but it is always windy in the great southwest in the spring, so be aware! South eastern Utah has some of the best petroglyphs I have seen so far! Another favorite is Three Rivers in Eastern NM, also has a great small campground there! Only 2 with water & electric anf the other 10 or so are all dry camping. You can do a search on my blog for Three Rivers if you are interested.
DeleteRVSue is still trying to get all of her material transferred over to hostgator, so she will own her blog and not wordpress! She has a very slow connection and it is taking a few days for the transfer to complete and this is a bit further complicated by the Memorial Day holiday. She will be back online soon, she has respectfully requested that you not send her emails or comments to her blog as this slows down the process even further! We are all anxious for our Sue and Crew "Fix" and it will happen soon, please just be patient! Thank you! Geri
